VIN guide · 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle
How to decode a 1969 Chevelle VIN
A 1969 Chevelle VIN has 13 characters. Read left to right, they give the GM division, the series (which also tells you 6-cylinder or V8), the body style, the model year, the assembly plant, and the car's place in that plant's production run. This guide walks through each part using the published charts listed under Sources at the bottom.
If you just want the answer for your car, paste the VIN into the free decoder on the home page. It runs in your browser and doesn't upload the VIN.
Where to find it
The VIN plate is on the forward part of the dash, where you can read it through the windshield. It was riveted to a bracket with distinctive "rosette" rivets [1].
Don't mix up the VIN plate with the Fisher Body plate (the cowl or trim tag). The series digits don't mean the same thing on the two plates. On the VIN, an odd third character means 6-cylinder and an even one means V8. The trim tag's third digit doesn't carry that meaning [1][2].
Worked example: 136379A307416
| Characters | Value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Chevrolet division |
| 2-3 | 36 | Malibu series, V8 (even third digit) |
| 4-5 | 37 | 2-door sport coupe |
| 6 | 9 | 1969 model year |
| 7 | A | Atlanta, Georgia assembly plant |
| 8-13 | 307416 | Plant sequence number. Numbering started at 300001, so this is the 7,416th 1969 Chevelle sequenced at Atlanta |
This is the example VIN chevellestuff.net uses on its Protect-O-Plate page [2], and the one our sample report decodes. A second published example, 136679B410561, is a Malibu V8 2-door convertible built in Baltimore, the 110,561st 1969 Chevelle sequenced there [1].
Character 1: division
1 means Chevrolet [1].
Characters 2-3: series
| Code | Series |
|---|---|
31 / 32 | 6-cylinder / V8. chevellestuff.net lists these as Nomad on its VIN page [1] and as Chevelle 300 on its Protect-O-Plate page [2] |
33 / 34 | 300 Deluxe (including the El Camino Deluxe) and Greenbrier, 6-cylinder / V8 [1][2] |
35 / 36 | Malibu (including the El Camino Custom) and Concours station wagon, 6-cylinder / V8 [1][2] |
38 | Concours Estate station wagon, V8 [1][2] |
The El Camino isn't its own series code. It's a body style (80) in the 300 Deluxe or Malibu series [1].
What about the SS 396? There is no SS series code in the 1969 VIN charts above [1][2]. In 1969 the SS 396 was an option, so a real SS and a plain Malibu V8 can share the same 136 VIN prefix. The VIN alone can't prove an SS. Proof comes from documents such as the build sheet or Protect-O-Plate, checked alongside the trim tag and the engine.
Characters 4-5: body style
| Code | Body style |
|---|---|
27 | 2-door coupe |
35 | 4-door station wagon, 2-seat, conventional tailgate |
36 | 4-door station wagon, 2-seat, dual tailgate |
37 | 2-door sport coupe |
39 | 4-door sport sedan |
46 | 4-door station wagon, 3-seat, dual tailgate |
67 | 2-door convertible |
69 | 4-door sedan |
80 | 2-door sedan pickup (El Camino) |
Source: [1]. The Protect-O-Plate page [2] lists the same codes except 46.
Character 6: model year
9 means 1969 [1].
Character 7: assembly plant
| Code | Plant |
|---|---|
A | Atlanta, Georgia |
B | Baltimore, Maryland |
G | Framingham, Massachusetts |
K | Kansas City, Missouri |
Z | Fremont, California |
1 | Oshawa, Ontario, Canada |
These are the six plants that built 1969 Chevelles [1][2]. chevellestuff.net notes there are no known 1969 convertibles or station wagons from Atlanta or Framingham [1], so a 67 or wagon body code paired with an A or G plant deserves a closer look.
Characters 8-13: sequence number
- 1969 Chevelle numbering started at
300001at every plant [1]. - Each plant numbered all Chevelle series and body styles in one run, so the sequence doesn't tell you the model. Two cars from different plants can have the same sequence number, with only the plant code different [1].
- Baltimore and Kansas City built more than 100,000 cars, so their later VINs run into
4nnnnn[1]. - Early Oshawa-built cars are an exception. At least 11,323 of them started at
100001[1]. A US-plant 1969 Chevelle with a sequence below 300001 is worth questioning.
What the VIN can't tell you
The 1969 Chevelle VIN gives 6-cylinder or V8, but not the engine size. It doesn't record option packages like the SS 396, and it can't show whether the engine is original. It also can't detect a swapped or re-stamped VIN plate. For those questions you need the trim tag, the engine stamping, and factory paperwork such as a build sheet or Protect-O-Plate.
